The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned of a tsunami in Surigao del Sur at 10:37 on the evening of Dec. 2, 2023, after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, the Phivolcs tweeted.
The 7.4 magnitude tectonic earthquake occurred 30 kilometers (km) northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur on the evening of Dec. 2, 2023. Damage and aftershocks are expected according to the Phivolcs earthquake bulletin issued at 11:35 p.m.
On the following day at 1:40 a.m. on Dec. 3, 2023, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake of the same tectonic origin jolted 41 km northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur again. This time, Phivolcs issued no expected damage, except for aftershocks.
